Lipid Nutrition will make a Novel Food application for CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) this year after months of wrangling with the European Commission over its regulatory status.
The move, which follows the publication of a favourable meta-analysis of human studies on CLA highlighting its abilities to reduce body fat and build lean muscle mass, should pave the way for its use in food products as well as supplements in Europe.
It is also hoped that a claim about CLA will make it onto the 'article 13' list of health claims supported by generally accepted science under the new Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation.
