Oral probiotics first for Chr Hansen
Chr Hansen is the first to market with oral probiotic capsules designed to help restore and maintain healthy vaginal flora.
The capsules, which contain patented probiotic strains GR-1 and RC-14, have been extensively tested in clinical trials in several countries, said Tine Westerdahl, the company's head of marketing, human health and nutrition.
She added: "This will meet the needs of women all over the world." Imbalances in the microflora of the genital area could lead to a number of unpleasant conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, said Westerdahl. "Probiotics can restore the bacterial balance."
Bacterial vaginosis is a mild infection in the vagina that can occur when the normal balance of bacteria is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria. It is sometimes accompanied by discharge, odour, pain, itching, or burning.
