DSM will employ more than 100 research and development (R&D) staff at its 'China Campus' in the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Shanghai by the end of next year as part of its mission to break through the $1bn sales barrier in China by 2010.

DSM, which has just opened a $10M flavours plant in Xinghuo, near Shanghai, said it expected to recruit an additional 100 R&D staff in a second phase of development post 2008.

R&D spending in China was increasing by 20% a year, said DSM Nutritional Products' director of process research Dr Reinhard Karge.

He added: "There is an enormous talent pool emerging. Do we just sit and watch, or do we seize the opportunity?"

While wages were going up, they were still significantly lower than they were in Europe, he said. "The average salary of a phD chemist in China is only €10,000."

In 2006, DSM's sales in China topped $775M, an increase of 25% on the previous year.
