R&D down EU priority list
European food manufacturers spend less on research and development (R&D) than counterparts in the US and Asia, the European Commission has revealed.
According to its 2006 Industrial R&D investment scorecard, R&D expenditure as a percentage of sales is just 0.24% in Europe compared to 0.35% in the US, 0.4% in Australia and 1.21% in Japan.
Nestlé was the biggest spender, pumping euro 964M into R&D in 2005, closely followed by Unilever at euro 953M and Danisco at euro 126M.
Outside Europe, Ajinomoto, Kellogg and General Mills led the field, coughing up euro 204M, euro 153M and euro 147M on R&D in 2005 respectively.
