UK farmers' co-op First Milk is moving into the functional ingredients market with the launch of a heat and acid stable galacto-oligosaccharide prebiotic made from milk, which it claims helps to stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

The firm is targeting customers across Europe in confectionery, cereals, ready meals, dairy desserts, bakery products and drinks. It is currently supplied as a syrup, but may be co-dried with other powders in future, said technical and development manager Joanna Gleeson.
