Cognis hopes to gain regulatory approval to start marketing foods containing the weight management ingredient conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in Europe by next spring.

Cognis is also hoping that health claims about CLA will be approved in the EU under the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation by 2010.

However, claims approved by the European Food Safety Authority would not necessarily be rubber stamped by the European Commission, warned the firm. "Even claims successfully assessed by EFSA may be rejected by the EC or Member States for political reasons."
