Novel Food: revised at last

The European Commission has published a proposed revision of the Novel Food Regulation in order to simplify and speed up the process.
Under the proposal, applications would go straight to the European Food Safety Authority for assessment, while traditional foods from third countries would be assessed via a faster track process. Generic authorisations would also be introduced, although the option of protection for companies with new technologies would be available.
