Sweet deal for Danisco
Japanese starch processor Nihon Starch has struck a deal to use Danisco's patented technology to produce commercial quantities of a calorie-free sweetener called anhydrofructose for the Asian market.
The sweetener, which is not yet approved for use in the US or Europe, is found naturally in mushrooms and seaweed, but would be made on an industrial scale from glucose, said Danisco.
Its antimicrobial effects made anhydrofructose particularly well suited to meat products, added a spokesman. It was suitable for use in a broad range of foods including bakery products, he said.
