French firm Lesaffre has created a nutrition and health division dedicated to developing yeast ingredients for functional foods and dietary supplements.

The new products, which contain B vitamins, selenium, chrome, copper, manganese, zinc, beta-glucans and amino acids, will be sold under the new brand name Lynside, said general manager Antoine Baule: "The dietary supplements and functional foods market is experiencing strong growth. In some countries, preventative measures are used to help reduce public spending on health issues. Yeast and its derivatives therefore have great potential in nutrition and health."

Lesaffre, which is also researching the probiotic effects of yeast, already has a range of soluble yeast extracts, yeast cell walls products, fortified years and inactive nutritional yeasts, and will progressively launch new products over the next three years.

Lesaffre has been a leading player in baking ingredients for decades, manufacturing yeasts belonging to the Saccharomyces Cerevisiase species.

The Lynside brand includes: Nutri-inactive nutritional yeasts, Forte-fortified yeasts, Wall yeast cell walls, plus YE-soluble yeast extracts.
