The path of yeast resistance

Horopito, which is grown in the New Zealand rainforest, has already had some success in Italy, where consumers are looking for natural alternatives to tackle common yeast infections such as thrush, said Forest Herbs Research.

The firm, which has patented its extraction technique and is selling certified organic active horopito extracts under the Kolorex brand, is also offering applications for oral care and gut health. However, it can also be used as a flavour enhancer and preservative as well as an antimicrobial.

Available as a gel or a powder, the extract is approved for use in Europe, where it has been consumed since 1994, said the company. Horopito, which has a peppery taste, is also used in avocado oil, infusions and topical applications.

While some consumers would always seek medical advice to deal with yeast infections, growing numbers preferred natural alternatives, especially if they had a recurring condition, said a spokesman from New Zealand Trade & Enterprise.
