Vollmond lager is not your average beer. Made in the Swiss Alps by Suisse Connection and recently launched in the UK, the beer is brewed according to biodynamic farming principles, which means it is brewed only on the night of the full moon.

Biodynamic agriculture was first developed in 1924 and is founded on a holistic and spiritual understanding of nature, according to the research of Rudolf Steiner.

Ed Inett from New Chapter Marketing, which promotes the beer, said: "Biodynamics is a natural extension from organics as it takes the principles to their fullest extent. It's more popular in Continental Europe, but people are also starting to buy into it in the UK as it's environmentally friendly."

The barley is grown at high altitude where pests die from oxygen starvation, eliminating the need for fungicides, he said.
