Disease risk claims in
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has already received more than 30 applications to make health claims about ingredients claiming to reduce the risk of disease or boost the health and development of children.
The applications fall under article 14 of the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation and require applicants to submit lengthy dossiers of scientific evidence. Recent submissions include a cholesterol-lowering claim about plant sterols from Unilever; a blood pressure reduction claim for dairy peptides from Valio; an infant brain and eye development claim about the omega-3 fatty acid DHA from Martek Biosciences; a heart disease risk reduction claim from Bioserae about a cactus extract and a claim from Leaf about xylitol and a reduction in the risk of tooth decay.
Separately, EFSA is expecting to receive 1,500 applications under article 13 of the regulation, which covers health claims about nutrients that help the growth, development and functions of the body; cognitive and mood-related claims and weight-management claims.
