The science of satiety

As soon as food is ingested, the stomach fills; gastric distension increases and stimulates receptors that feed back to the hypothalamus. Food also stimulates the release of several digestive hormones, such as CCK.

However, appetite is not the only factor governing what, when and how much we eat. Psychological, sensory, social and environmental cues also affect consumption, along with energy density, portion size and volume.

Nevertheless, many scientists believe products helping us eat just 50-100 calories fewer a day could make the difference between weight maintenance and the gradual weight gain that over a period of years leads to overweight and, ultimately, obesity.
