Generic health claims in trouble?
The health claims Regulation is not geared up to handle generic health claims about whole food groups such as dairy or fruit and vegetables, Ireland's National Dairy Council (NDC) has claimed.
Speaking after its applications to make claims about dairy and weight and dental health were both rejected by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the NDC said it had withdrawn a third application about dairy and bones as "it will probably be rejected as well". It said: "The Regulation is geared up for commercial applications about specific products, not generic food groups." Its comments came after EFSA rejected seven out of eight of the first applications submitted under article 14 of the Regulation.
