Nutrient profiling

The European Commission's working group on nutrition and health claims will meet again at the end of March to thrash out the details of how to establish a fair system of nutrient profiles under the controversial Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation.

One source who attended the last meeting, said: "There was general agreement that separate profiles for food categories would be unworkable and a single profile would be easier and quicker to develop. However, there were concerns about how certain foods would fare under a single nutrient profile and it was agreed that some might be exempt. This would permit a claim on something like cheese, despite its high fat and salt content."
